A Journey with Ms. Pia Pulido: CAE Teachers’ Inspiration to Teaching Reading

Feature

by Ms. Rosally S. Viray

In life, you will meet individuals whose dedication to their chosen vocation goes beyond the ordinary; their commitment leaves a lasting impact on the lives of those they encounter. For me, this person is Ms. Pia Pulido, the woman who inspires me to do more for the young learners of Assumpta.

Ms. Pulido visited the school in 2022, together with her batchmates from Assumption College, for a medical mission. Taking the opportunity to teach reading to the teachers of the early graders, she invited the members of the Communication Arts in English Department, Ms. Paula Salonga of the Preschool Department, and Ms. Alliah Reyes, who was given the Remedial Reading assignment that year, for a formation session. In our first encounter, she brought with her interesting storybooks, her sweet smile, her warm aura, and her ardent passion to help us improve the reading scope, strategies, and techniques we employ in our classes. The first meeting led to another one, and another one, and another one until she became a significant person in the lives of the English teachers through her continuous communication with Ms. Edlyn Gail De Leon, our coordinator then.

Being a reading specialist, Ms. Pia firmly believes in the power of literacy. Her fun and creative ways of teaching reading and writing are tailored to fit her learners’ unique needs. Her discussions on reading assessment, remedial reading, and stages of literacy development instill in us the desire to offer more for our own learners, particularly the graders. She instills in us the zeal to make our learners believe that reading is not just a skill needed to be mastered for them to succeed academically but an exciting adventure waiting to unfold. The sessions we had with her moved us to revisit and improve our programs and offerings, paving the way for a more structured reading assessment and remedial reading program.

Meeting Ms. Pulido, one cannot help but feel inspired to do better and to do more. Her passion to change the lives of others through literacy transcends the mundane demands of teaching; it clearly shows a deep-rooted conviction of what education can do. As I perform my duties and carry on with my journey in the English Department, I take with me the invaluable lessons that I learned from this extraordinary woman.
