November 6, 2024, San Simon, Pampanga – “Saan ka dadalhin ng halagang piso?” These words from Ms. Arlene Carlos, School Director of Assumpta Technical High School (ATHS), marked the opening of the “Piso Para sa Iskolar” Recognition Day — a heartwarming event celebrating the launch of a scholarship program, which was unveiled during the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Sr. Josefina Maria Magat as a Religious of the Assumption sister.
In her speech, Ms. Carlos highlighted how the initiative, which began with the humble value of a peso, ignited a movement of generosity from stakeholders and benefactors, transforming the peso into a powerful symbol of hope and love for the scholarship recipients. The scholarship program was created to provide educational support to deserving students, and it now holds a significant place in the legacy of Sr. Josefina, whose desire to empower and uplift more Assumptans through the program has become a reality.
After the Golden Jubilee Celebration, held last May 12, 2024, Sr. Josefina began her work in establishing the scholarship program. A committee was soon formed to organize and manage the program, which included Khloe Harbie Valencia (ASB President), Kim Charles Cano (ASB Vice-President), Ms. Agnes Pangilinan (Assistant Director for Administration and Finance), Ms. Connie Pagcu (Admissions and Grants Officer), and Sr. Josefina herself. Together, they laid the foundation of the program, establishing guidelines, a selection process, and criteria for choosing the beneficiaries.
After careful deliberation, 15 Grade 7 learners were selected as the pioneering beneficiaries of the program. These students will receive scholarships that will support them throughout their journey in Senior High School. During the Recognition Day, the students, together with their parents, were presented with certificates of recognition and letters of confirmation from Sr. Josefina and Ms. Carlos.
The event was filled with heartfelt stories of how Sr. Josefina’s vision for the program took shape and how it has received overwhelming support from all stakeholders, Assumption communities, and friends. The Assumpta Student Board (ASB), one of the first contributors to the project, promised to continue its support through various income-generating projects and activities.
Sr. Josefina’s profound love for Assumpta shines through the foundation of a program that not only helps its beneficiaries but also contributes to the school’s financial sustainability. Her vision encapsulates the very essence of Assumpta—a school born out of love, generosity, and service to the poor. Her legacy project is a reminder that the school, like a tree that has grown strong over the years, continues to give back to the community it serves.
Vincent Van Gogh’s words resonate deeply in this edifying gesture: “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” The “Piso Para sa Iskolar” program is a manifestation of how even the smallest acts of love can create a lasting impact.
The recognition day marks just the beginning of what will surely be a long-lasting legacy for the Assumpta community, providing hope and opportunity for generations to come.
